BURIED OIL TANKS

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
It was a standard procedure locally during the 1960s, 70s and 80s to bury home heating oil tanks. Eventually steel tanks rust through and leak. Oil spills are unacceptable and expensive to clean up.

WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?
Try to find out if you are buying an oil spill with the house. If a tank is present consider testing it for leaks. It would be wise to remove or close the tank. check with state agencies and get a list of tank inspection/closure companies. Remember sooner or later the tank will leak.
